Chapmans Peak Drive

About Chapmans Peak Drive

It is not difficult to understand why Chapmans Peak Drive is considered one of the most scenic drives around the world. Situated between Noordhoek and Hout Bay, this undulating pass set on the side of the mountain offers incredible scenery and views and is a firm favourite among locals and tourists alike.

Chapmans Peak is named after John Chapman, a Ships Pilot of the English Ship, Contest after he was sent ashore to find provisions. During this time, he named the bay Chapmans Chaunce (chance) and the name has stuck ever since. Using convict labour, construction of Chapmans Peak Drive started in 1915 on the Hout Bay side and took 7 years to complete.

Today Chapmans Peak is a toll road and can be EXPLORED from both Noordhoek and Hout Bay and makes for an excellent stop to view the sunset. There are many stops along the way as well as access to famous hiking routes where visitors can EXPERIENCE the incredible views. Noordhoek and Hout Bay are also famous towns and offers an array of things to do.
