Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) City Tour & Game Viewing
The walk starts at the 52 metre high memorial with 204 steps, the Campanile, built in 1923 in memory of the landing of the 1820 British Settlers.
From the Campanile continue along the Beach Front to one of PE’s upmarket suburbs, which is a very popular beach area. Stop for a beach, Shark Rock Pier view and brief walk. Pass by the Business School of the Nelson Mandela University, named after Nelson Mandela, the humanitarian, freedom fighter and world’s peace icon, and Boardwalk Shopping Mall as you drive to Donkin Reserve.
From Summerstrand, you drive to Donkin Memorial, a stone pyramid erected in memory of Sir Rufane Donkin’s wife Elizabeth – Port Elizabeth was named after her.
Alight from the vehicle and walk through the reserve to view the Pyramid, lighthouse and beautiful 470 square meter mosaic, situated between the Pyramid and the Great Flag (the biggest flag in South Africa and 2nd highest in Africa) celebrates the multi-cultural, the heritage, the diverse histories and abundant fauna and flora that characterises the city and the province.
Descend the mosaic steps, passing by the Main Library, an excellent example of Victorian Gothic architecture and catch your lift by the City Hall.
Your last leg of the city tour ends at the Nelson Mandela Stadium, a world class stadium accommodating up to 46 000 people.
